Ceramic coatings possess high hardness and chemical resistance and are commonly used as electrical insulators, thermal barriers or wear resistant coatings. Through the use of liquid feedstock multiphase ceramic coatings can be prepared in a relatively simple manner with almost freely adjustable composition. In current research, single-phase ceramic suspensions are modified by adding a second ceramic phase to deposit tailored layers for various applications. The multiphase coatings consist of oxide-ceramic mixtures (e.g. aluminum oxide / zirconium oxide) or oxide-carbide compounds (e.g. titanium dioxide / titanium carbide).
